Demonologia, or Natural Knowledge Revealed

Demonologia, or Natural Knowledge Revealed

“…being an exposé of ancient and modern superstitions, credulity, fanaticism, enthusiasm, & imposture, as connected with the doctrine, caballa, and jargon, of amulets, apparitions, astrology, charms, demonology ... witchcraft, &c.”

J.S.F. (Forsyth, J. S.). London: A.K. Newman & Co., 1831. Second Edition. Original boards. Octavo. xvi + 438pp. Engraved fold-out frontispiece. Shows signs of text block having been reattached. Signed by owner on front flyleaf. Chops on flyleaf and interior of box. Contains some notes by previous owner, in pencil. In handmade case - cloth with leather spine. Very good.

Originally published in 1827. Scarce in original boards. Even moreso in this condition.

Purports to debunk but really just explains, leaving the reader to draw their own conclusions. Includes chapters on "gipsies", jugglers, witches, and all of the -mancies. While interest in the occult may fade in and out (and remains perennially unpopular when tyrants reign, according to the preface), ritual has deep roots in the cultures that develop and practice them and the study of occultism can amount to a kind of ethnography.

Also included are several clippings compiled by the previous owner - Carl E. Melugin of the the "Art of Calmness" training school, in San Francisco - ranging from the late 1920s to late 1940s.
