Calef, Robert. Boston: Timothy Bedlington, 1828. Second American Edition. Marbeled calf. 12mo. xvi + 333pp. Gilt covers and spine. Engraved frontispiece. Printed in Woodstock, VT by David Watson. Includes names of previous owners - both women. Chip in leather on spine, obscuring title. Slight discolouration on witches' faces on frontispiece, appears intentional. Very good +. Leather bound.

"There's none but witches do inhabit here."

A reasoned counterpoint to Cotton Mather's witch hunt hysteria. Originally printed in London in 1700, the first copy to land in Boston was publicly burned because they were ALL ABOUT THAT at the time. Like any reasonable approach to anything has ever involved attempting to set it on fire.
