Originally published as A New Dominion, this is the 10th novel by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (1927-2013), written while she was living in India. Her 11th novel, Heat and Dust, won the Booker prize in 1975. In addition to novels she collaborated often with Merchant Ivory Productions. She is, to date, the only person to have won both the Booker prize and an Oscar. Born in Germany, her family fled to England in 1939. She moved to India with her husband in 1951 and to New York in 1986, where she became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
