In addition to novels she collaborated often with Merchant Ivory Productions. She is, to date, the only person to have won both the Booker prize and an Oscar. Born in Germany, her family fled to England in 1939. She moved to India with her husband in 1951 and to New York in 1986, where she became a naturalized citizen of the United States.

"I stand before you as a writer without any ground of being out of which to write: really blown about from country to country, culture to culture till I feel, till I am, nothing. As it happens, I like it that way." - Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, in her 1979 address "Disinheritance"
