"Alone in the forest in the middle of the day, are you scared?"

Genevieve Castrée (1981-2016) was a Québecois expat cartoonist and musician who recorded music under the names Woelv and Ô PAON. Her album "Tout Seul" was recorded in French, with an accompanying book of lyrics and illustrations by Castrée, and translations of the lyrics into 13 different languages. The album and the book both seek to make sense of privilege, fear, and hatred while trying to maintain hope and staying grounded in the natural world. In 2007, Castrée described the album as part of a continuum:

"Tout Seul dans la Forêt en Plein Jour, Avez-Vous Peur? is a record about present times, but may very well be about what has happened in the past and what might just happen again in the future. Are you scared?"

While the work is ultimately a dark one, it is also about the necessity of making art out of the darkness. We're all scared. The world has always been ending; what really matters is how we greet that end.
