Chiang Yee (1903-1977) was a Chinese author, painter, calligrapher and poet who spent more than 40 years away from his homeland and wrote extensively about the experience. His observations of culture and customs in the United Kingdom (1933-1955) and United States (1955-1975) contained the kind of beauty and freshness that can only come from outside. This particular document captures a San Francisco immediately post-beats, pre-summer of love, and an absolute age before it became the nearly-uninhabitable dystopia we now know it as. Chiang's book recalls kinder times.
